Frequently Asked Questions from Toyota

UPDATES:
Update 3/6/10: We continue processing recalled vehicles at an astounding rate. Our service department has caught up with the backlog and has many appointments available within 24 hours. Becoming more efficient at these repairs has also allowed us to return to a more normal schedule before our technicians become completely exhausted! We are canceling Sunday service and scaling back our closing time to 8 PM.  Jim Waters, Wilsonville Toyota Service & Parts Director, wants to re-assure customers that he will continue to keep an eye on scheduling to make sure everyone that wants a convenient appointment gets one.

Update 2/18/10: Repairs are in full swing including inspections on the Toyota Tacoma. Our Toyota-Certified Service Manager, Jim Waters, notes the extended hours and recommends that you schedule an appointment for fastest service.

Update 2/10/10: Edmunds.com, "the premier online resource for automotive information," just came out with a great article after reviewing the NHTSA database of consumer complaints. "A key finding: despite being the subject of intense scrutiny of the company, Toyota ranks 17th among automakers in the overall number of complaints per vehicle sold." Click here to see the full article from Edmunds.com.

Update 2/10/10: Wilsonville Toyota is currently performing all recall fixes under our extended hours for all affected vehicles including the 2010 Prius (Braking).  Please call us or click here to schedule an appointment.

Update 2/9/10: Here at Wilsonville Toyota, we will be prepared to download the braking software update for 2010 Prius owners' cars soon. Watch your mailbox or continue to check back here for details.

Update 2/06/10: Wilsonville Toyota is in full swing repairing recall-affected cars and trucks!  Our Service Department is open extended hours to take care of these vehicle owners. Monday through Saturday, 7 AM - 9 PM and Sunday, 10 AM - 4 PM.  Don't forget to hitch a ride on the Bridgeport shuttle to pass the time!

Update 2/04/10: We are now moving forward with repairs on most vehicles. Please schedule an appointment by calling the store instead of using the online scheduling system for recall-related repairs.  We are open extended hours in Service for your convenience.  We are also providing a shuttle service to the Bridgeport Shopping Center in addition to our standard shuttle service.  As always, we don't mind if you utilize our comfortable customer waiting area.  We've got Starbucks coffee, snacks, free WiFi, big screen TVs, comfortable seating, and a kids room.

Update 2/03/10: Toyota has informed us that necessary parts and training are on the way to us.  We will post on this site as soon as we're prepared to start working on recalled vehicles. We will be available at significantly extended hours to be as convenient as possible for our customers.  We are also committed to working on your cars first before we start on our current inventory.  If you would like an email or phone call when we are ready, please let us know by clicking this link: Contact Me About the Recall!

Update 2/03/10: Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood inadvertently frightened many Toyota owners early Wednesday morning when he said, during a hearing on Capitol Hill, that any owner of a car affected by the recall should "stop driving it and take it to a dealer." LaHood later corrected himself, saying that he only meant that owners should get their cars fixed as soon as possible. Toyota has issued their own statement available in the LINKS section above.

Update 2/01/10: See video in MULTIMEDIA below! Official statement released titled, "Toyota Announces Comprehensive Plan to Fix Accelerator Pedals on Recalled Vehicles and Ensure Customer Safety."  Most importantly, the release states that, "Parts to reinforce the pedals are already being shipped for use by dealers, and dealer training is under way."  Great news for all of our customers awaiting a solution. In addition, Toyota sent on overview of the fix to us. Click to see hi-res picture of the specific fix here.

Update 1/30/10: The US Government has approved Toyota's solution for resolving the gas pedal recall. Official announcement of the fix is supposed to be announced early next week. We hope to begin receiving details and parts soon!  Toyota is asking that you wait until you receive offical instructions in the mail on how to proceed.  We will, of course, provide information on this site as soon as it's available.

Update 1/28/10: Toyota published a note of regret for the problem on their pressroom site (see "Latest News" above.)  Also, a reminder that this problem is generally not a "sudden" condition.  A sticky accelerator is a gradually worsening condition.  If you notice your accelerator pedal becoming sticky, either up or down, please contact the Wilsonville Toyota Service Department at 503-783-5900 immediately so we can help troubleshoot the problem with you.  We are concerned and want to help while Toyota remedies the situation as quickly as possible.

Update 01/26/10: Toyota announced today that we will no longer be selling affected vehicles until the necessary remedy has been performed.  Also, we have more information about which specific vehicles are affected.  Here is the latest list of involved vehicles on the 2010 Toyota Voluntary Accelerator Pedal Safety Recall:

Prior news: Toyota's accelerator pedal recall is confined to the following Toyota Division vehicles:

  • 2009-2010 RAV4,
  • 2009-2010 Corolla,
  • 2009-2010 Matrix,
  • 2005-2010 Avalon,
  • 2007-2010 Camry,
  • 2010 Highlander,
  • 2007-2010 Tundra,
  • 2008-2010 Sequoia

No Lexus Division or Scion vehicles are affected by this recall action.  Also not affected are Toyota Prius, Tacoma, Sienna, Venza, Solara, Yaris, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser and select Camry models, including all Camry hybrids.

As soon as Wilsonville Toyota receives the supplies, equipment, and training needed to support this voluntary safety recall from Toyota, we will begin scheduling appointments for this service.

While incidents are rare, Toyota takes the safety of its customers very seriously and is working quickly to prepare the correction remedy.

In the unlikely event that a driver experiences an accelerator pedal that sticks in a partial open throttle position or returns slowly to idle position, the vehicle can be controlled with firm and steady application of the brakes. The brakes should not be pumped repeatedly because it could deplete vacuum assist, requiring stronger brake pedal pressure. The vehicle should be driven to the nearest safe location, the engine shut off and a Toyota dealer contacted for assistance.

Toyota will continue to investigate incidents of unwanted acceleration and take appropriate measures to address any trends that are identified.

Toyota owners who have questions or concerns should contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331

Inaccurate Reports of Future Prius Recall

3/9/2010 from pressroom.toyota.com

Media reports, citing a Wall Street Journal article, have incorrectly reported that Toyota plans to announce a new recall for the 2004-2009 Prius to address the potential risk for floor mat entrapment of accelerator pedals.

There is no new recall being planned for the Prius to address this issue.  To be clear, the 2004-2009 Prius was part of Toyota's November 2, 2009 announcement of a voluntary safety recall campaign to address floor mat entrapment in certain Toyota and Lexus vehicles.  This announcement can be found at our press room at: http://pressroom.toyota.com/pr/tms/lexus/toyota-begins-interim-notification-112086.aspx.

Other models involved in this previously-announced recall include 2007-2010 Camry, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2007-2010 ES 350, 2006-2010 IS 250, and 2006-2010 IS 350.  On January 27, 2010, Toyota expanded the campaign to include the 2008-2010 Highlander, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Venza, 2009-2010 Matrix and 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe.

The remedy process for these vehicles began at the end of 2009 and is occurring on a rolling schedule during 2010.  Owners of the involved vehicles that have not yet been remedied are asked to take out any removable driver's side floor mat and not replace it with any other floor mat.

Owners who have further questions are asked to visit www.toyota.com or www.lexus.com or contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331 or Lexus Customer Assistance at 1-800-255-3987.

U.S. News and World Report Offers Five Reasons to Buy a Toyota

3/8/2010 from www.usnews.com

Although Toyota has taken a nose dive, it will recover, writes Rick Newman in U.S. News and World Report. And he offers five reasons to buy a Toyota vehicle: "Safety concerns are exaggerated, recalls aren't the whole story, Toyota's not alone, the cars are still good, and [Toyota offers] white-glove treatment." Gawker.com Calls Part of ABC News Report "Staged"

3/7/2010 from Gawker.com

In the ABC News segment about professor David Gilbert's allegations of unintended acceleration, reporter Brian Ross and his crew fabricated a critical shot of the Toyota's tachometer, according to Gawker.com. Gawker contends that ABC then inserted the shot into a sequence that shows Ross driving the car in a way that manipulated reality for dramatic effect to suit his story line. "The tachometer footage is faked," Gawker said.

Toyota: Sudden acceleration test unrealistic

3/5/2010 from www.cnnmoney.com

Toyota is rejecting a university professor's test that claims to show that electronic throttle systems on Toyota cars could cause unintended acceleration saying the test was simply not realistic.

Dr. David Gilbert of Southern Illinois University performed a demonstration of how the problem could occur in an ABC News broadcast in late February. Later, Gilbert testified before a Congressional hearing looking into unintended acceleration in Toyota cars.  "Dr. Gilbert's demonstration, as shown on the ABC News web site, amounts to little more than connecting three of the six pedal sensor wires to an engineered circuit to achieve engine revving," said Exponent, a research firm hired by Toyota, in a report obtained by CNN that was prepared for Toyota attorneys.

Some safety consultants have alleged that electronic throttle control, or ETC, systems used on Toyota cars are a likely cause of unintended acceleration problems. Toyota has said it is studying the issue but has not found any fault in the electronic systems that would lead to unintended acceleration in real world conditions. Still, Toyota (TM) has recalled more than 8 million cars for mechanical problems including issues related to the gas pedals.

Gilbert said he had uncovered a potential for a short circuit that could undermine the electronic throttle control system's built in safety checks. The system used on Toyota cars relies on two separate sensors connected to the gas pedal and another pair connected to the throttle valve itself. In order for the system to work, each sensor in a pair has to match. If they don't match in the proper way, an on-board computer immediately senses a problem and the engine power is reduced to idle or it's shut off altogether. Gilbert said that he overrode that safety feature, allowing faulty pedal signals to go to the engine with no problem being detected by the car's on-board computer.

Exponent, the research firm hired by Toyota, was able to replicate Gilbert's results but says that the test presents an unrealistic situation that has virtually no chance of happening in the real world. "For such an event to happen in the real world requires a sequence of faults that is extraordinarily unlikely," the report continues.

Exponent was also able to replicate the same sequence of short circuits, with the same result, in other automakers' cars, which would undercut the allegation that the problem would be somehow unique to Toyotas. "Every vehicle from other manufacturers tested by Exponent could be induced to respond with a sudden increase in engine speed and power output," Exponent said in a fact sheet. "These demonstrations in no way indicate a defect with any of the vehicles tested (including the Toyota Avalon and Camry)."

A representative for Southern Illinois University said that Dr. Gilbert has already met with Toyota representatives and that more meetings are planned.

Toyota Rebuts ABC News Portrayal of Unintended Acceleration

3/8/2010 from www.toyotanewsroom.com

Toyota today raised serious concerns about the validity, methodology and credibility of a demonstration of alleged unintended acceleration in a Toyota Avalon by University of Southern Illinois professor David Gilbert. He presented his findings during a Congressional hearing and on a segment of ABC News. At a news briefing this morning at TMS headquarters in Torrance, Calif., Toyota revealed the results of a comprehensive analysis conducted by the company and engineering consulting firm Exponent. The analysis of Gilbert's findings shows:

1. The Toyota vehicle's electronics were rewired and reengineered in multiple ways and in a specific sequence. There is no evidence to suggest that this highly unlikely scenario has ever occurred in the real world.
2. The electronic systems were actively manipulated to mimic a valid full-throttle condition
3. Substantially similar results can be obtained in vehicles made by other manufacturers.

On hand to discuss these findings were J. Christian Gerdes, mechanical engineering professor at Stanford University and director, Center for Automotive Research at Stanford (CARS); Subodh Medhekar, principal engineer, Exponent; and Kristen Tabar, general manager of Electronics Systems, Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. To read the news release and view related materials, including several videotaped demonstrations, please click on: http://pressroom.toyota.com/pr/tms/electronic-throttle-control-154300.aspx.
