Introducing Toyota’s Star Safety System – the six feature system specializing in traction, cornering and braking technologies. The Star Safety System is designed to improve acceleration, steering and stopping, specifically in slippery or wet driving conditions. Our Star Safety System comes equipped with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology (SST). This advanced safety system comes standard on all new Toyota vehicles.
VSC is designed specifically to assist in safety while cornering. This system determines whether the vehicle is following the driver’s intended path by analyzing data from both the steering wheel position sensor and the ABS wheel-speed sensors to determine whether your vehicle is following the path that it should be. If the vehicle is not following the driver’s steered direction, the system will reduce engine power and pulse on the appropriate side of the brakes to help correct the steering.
Your vehicles TRAC system works by constantly monitoring the tires, and when they begin to slip, the TRAC system provides extra traction and grip that is necessary to accelerate safely and efficiently on slippery or wet surfaces. The system does this by either applying the brakes or slowing down the engine in order to maintain contact between the tires and the road.
When a wheel loses traction, a vehicle is hard to control – and that’s why ABS was invented. ABS uses magnetic wheel-speed sensors and a computer to monitor all four wheels while a vehicle is in motion. When the brakes are applied, and a wheel (or wheels) begins to decelerate faster than the others, the system can recognize that it’s losing traction or locked up. In response, the system rapidly pulses the brake at that wheel until it begins to roll at the same speed as the others. At the same time, it maintains brake pressure on the wheels with better grip to help prevent skidding.
EBD is a part of your vehicle’s ABS system. This feature reduces brake pressure to lightly loaded wheels that are prone to skidding. When the ABS sensors detect wheel-speed difference, the ABS system and the EBD system work together to reduce brake pressure appropriately.
In the event of an emergency stop, the Brake Assist system applies increased braking power in order to assist in executing a quick, safe stop. BA determines the speed and force that the driver applies to the brake pedal to determine whether the driver is attempting an emergency stop. The BA system will then reduce the amount of braking power once the driver lets up on the brake pedal.
SST works together with the Star Safety System’s traction and braking systems in order to allow the vehicle to come to a stop even when the accelerator pedal is fully depressed. When this system is engaged, the engine output is cut to the idle position, reducing brake load. The sophisticated logic control system makes sure that this feature can not be activated when it is not needed.
