What is the Difference Between the 2018 and 2019 Toyota RAV4?

2019 RAV4 Performance Improvements

Toyota has improved the RAV4’s performance in quite a few ways.

First off, the RAV4 now rides on the same great Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform as its sedan relatives, Camry and Avalon. TNGA’s new platform has a lower center of gravity, creating an enhanced drive as well as increased legroom and visibility behind the wheel.

RAV4’s 2.5L 4-cylinder engine got a bit of an upgrade too, with the gas model producing 203 hp (an improvement from the 2018 model’s 176 hp) as well as the hybrid models reaching 219 hp.

Speaking of hybrid, RAV4 now comes in a choice of 5 gas trim levels and 4 hybrid models. Gas models start with the base LE model, then move up to XLE, XLE Premium, Adventure and Limited. Hybrid models available are LE, XLE Hybrid, Limited Hybrid and the all new XSE Hybrid.

The redesigned SUV comes in both FWD and AWD drivetrains, and is the first RAV4 model to feature active torque vectoring, which improves AWD handling. RAV4’s new AWD system also comes with an electric driveline disconnect, which switches to front wheel drive when AWD isn’t necessary, improving overall fuel economy. Additionally, RAV4’s Adventure grade comes with four AWD drive modes to improve handling and efficiency in mud, snow, sand and rocky terrains.

2019 RAV4 Exterior Improvements

If you’ve seen photos of the 2019 RAV4, you obviously already know that the exterior has had a complete makeover. The bold new exterior features sharp lines and an aggressive front grille. The exterior is both longer and wider, with a 30mm increase in wheelbase and 10mm increase in overall width compared to the outgoing model.

2019 RAV4 Safety & Tech Improvements

It’s 2019 and let’s be honest, our iPhones are basically our best friends. They keep us in contact with friends and family, provide us with directions, answer the ridiculous questions we ask Siri. RAV4’s standard Apple CarPlay allows you to take your iPhone on the go with you. Access all of your favorite music and podcasts, make phone calls, send text messages, get directions and more all from the 7-in. elevated touch-screen on your dashboard. The all-new RAV4 is now also Amazon Alexa compatible. Wi-Fi connect powered by Verizon is also an option in the tech-filled 2019 model, allowing your passengers to stay connected on the road.

If you currently drive a Toyota, you probably love all of the safety features included in Toyota Safety Sense (TSS). Toyota decided to add a few new features to the TSS mix, introducing TSS 2.0, which is standard on all 2019 RAV4 models. TSS 2.0 features all of the safety technologies available in TSS-P (Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Automatic High Beams) and then adds two new systems: Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) and Road Sign Assist (RSA). Lane Tracing Assist monitors your vehicle’s position within your lane and will warn you when you begin to drift. Road Sign Assist was created to help drivers see specific signs quicker and more clearly. RSA identifies stop, yield, do not enter and speed limit signs and displays them on your Toyota’s Multi-Information Display.

Additional safety features that are standard on the 2019 model are 8 standard airbags as well as a reverse camera with projected path lines. For additional parking assistance and visibility, the RAV4 Limited has a standard panoramic back-up cam and birds-eye view with perimeter scan and overhead 360 degree view.
